I will definitely be implementing that code (the "smart" pagination) but unfortunately I can't give you an exact date when it will be available. Since it's a complicated and somewhat delicate job, it's not something that I'm confident outsourcing to one of our developers.
My hunch is that after the dust settles from the 3.0.0 release, which is about to happen, I'll be putting this at the front of my queue.
