Is it possible to force the playback resolution to the highest setting supported by the video instead of requiring the user to click on the setting gear to increase resolution? Ideally, I would like the video to automatically start playing back in HD.

This is not something that is supported by the YouTube API and so is not something that we directly support. However, I would suggest searching these forums, as someone has posted a work-around that is unsupported by TubePress.
